Meet 15-year-old Kim (Olivia Hallinan). She and her family have just moved to sunny Brighton. Mom, Stella, (Sara Stewart) is an under-sexed woman on the verge of a mid-life crisis. Dad, Nathan (Richard Lumsden), is in complete denial about his failing marriage and completely unaware of the family crises surrounding him. Then there’s Kim’s eccentric little brother, Matt (Kurtis O’Brien) who wholeheartedly believes he is from another planet.
Although – in her view – Kim’s dysfunctional family constantly makes her life unbearable, she finds solace in an earth-shattering, hormone-surging crush she quickly develops on her new best friend, Sugar (Lenora Crichlow). Sugar is a free spirit. As wild as she is sexy, meeting her has turned Kim’s world upside down. As the friendship between Kim and Sugar begins to deepen and Kim’s family continues to unravel, we are led through a provocative and hilarious coming-of-age dramedy that will leave us all with a sweet-tooth.
Sugar Rush won the Children and Young People Award at the British Emmys in 2006 and was nominated by the British Academy of Film and Television Award in 2006 for Best Drama Series.
